Disk Partition: Why You Need to Hide it?

Hey guys, suppose one of your relative wants to use your laptop for sometime and you can’t refuse them. At same time you want to keep your information (images, files, videos) private also. But what if you have hundreds of private files to hide which contains sensitive information. Obviously, you don’t want to waste your time to hide those files one by one. It will take mountain size effort to do so. But the other side you don’t want to compromise your privacy.

I know you can hide files of any name or any size using file/folder properties. Unfortunately, this process can be time consuming and irritating if you have to hide files in large numbers. But luckily, you can hide whole disk partition in a minute or two. The hidden disk partition will not delete itself or delete any of your files, it will be just hidden until you make it visible again. We will use Disk Management and Command Prompt (better known as CMD) applications to hide a disk partition.

For your knowledge, there is a technical term used to call SHOW/HIDE a disk partition. For example, how would you say to someone that you are hiding a disk partition? Let me tell you. You would say that you are Dismounting a disk partition. And same like that, Mounting word is used to show a hidden disk partition. Let’s check how to do it.

How to Hide a Disk Partition in Windows using Disk Management Application

  • First of all, close all of the open files from the partition you want to hide.
  • Open Disk Management Application.
  • Find the disk partition from the list which you want to hide and then right click on the disk partition name (also referred as volume).
  • Select Change Drive Letter and Paths in the right click menu. A new window will open.

  • Please confirm the partition name and then press Remove button.

  • You are asked to confirm that you want to remove the drive letter. Press Yes.

  • System will give you a warning message about your drive is in use. You don’t need to worry if you have closed all of the open files from the disk partition. Click on OK.

  • Now, your partition is hidden and will not be visible in Windows Explorer or File Explorer. Please note that you can’t access any type of file from the drive you hide, until you make it visible.

How to Show or Unhide a Disk Partition in Windows using Disk Management Application

When you are ready to make the partition visible, you need to mount it in the system.  Let’s do it.

  • Open Disk Management and find the disk partition from the list which you want to mount.
  • Right click on the partition name.
  • Select Change Drive Letter and Paths in the right click menu. A new window will open.

  • Click on ADD button.

  • A new window will open to select the drive letter. Select the drive letter of your choice from the drop down list. Click on OK. By clicking on OK, system will assign a new drive letter to drive which you removed previously.

  • Dear reader, an alphabet letter is assigned to your drive and your drive is mounted. Now, you can access the files from the drive.

How to Hide a Disk Partition in Windows using Command Prompt

There are some limitations to work with Disk Management Application. In case, if you can’t hide a drive partition with Disk Management Application, another option is available for you and that is Command Prompt. Let’s hide drive partition using command prompt.

  • First of all, close all of the open files from the drive partition you want to hide.
  • Open command prompt with administrator permissions.
  • Type diskpart and hit the enter. Wait for few seconds until you can see the DISKPART on the screen.
  • Hide a Disk Partition CMD - diskpart
  • Type list volume and hit the enter. Find the drive partition from the list which you want to hide.
  • Hide a Disk Partition CMD - list volume
  • Find the volume number associated with your selected drive partition. You will need it in the next step.
  • Don’t forget to replace your volume number with * in this step. If your selected volume number is 1 then Type select volume 1 and hit the enter.

  • Find the drive letter of the drive partition which you want to hide.
  • Don’t forget to replace your drive letter with * in this step.  Type remove letter=* and hit the enter. It will remove the drive letter and your drive partition is now hidden.

  • You can check it in your Windows Explorer / File Explorer  (My Computer/ This PC). See the Image below.

How to Show or Unhide a Disk Partition in Windows using Command Prompt

  • Open command prompt with administrator permissions.
  •  Type diskpart and hit the enter. Wait for few seconds until you can see the DISKPART on the screen.

  • Type list volume and hit the enter.

  • From the list, find the hidden disk partition you want to make visible/accessible. Confused? Let me tell you, if any volume has not a drive letter then the partition is hidden. Drive letter is just an alphabet character.

  • Find the volume number associated with the selected hidden disk partition (a partition without alphabet character). You will need it in the next step.
  • Don’t forget to replace your volume number with * in this step. If your selected volume number is 3 then Type select volume 3 and hit the enter.

  • Here, you can assign the drive letter of your choice. But, Don’t forget to replace your drive letter with * in this step.  Type assign letter=* and hit the enter. It will assign the drive letter to drive and your drive partition is now visible.

  • Go ahead and access your files from Windows Explorer / File Explorer (My Computer/ This PC).
  • Hide a Disk Partition - All Drive Partition

Tip: You can also hide System Recovery Partition and System Reserved Partition using these methods.
