Why Should You Block Internet Access in Windows?

No doubt, every computer user used to work with third party programs like Photoshop for image editing, VLC media player for watching videos, PDF reader to read PDF documents etc. Almost all of third party programs can access internet in our device like to update program, to send system data, to send crash reports etc.

But, we can prevent those programs from internet access in windows. There can be many reasons for not allowing those programs to use internet. And if ever the internet speed is slow, then allowing those programs to use the internet can be a reason for headache. Actually, allowing those programs to use the Internet is the default. But, we have choice to disable the internet usage for those programs.

Windows has an inbuilt application which is used to monitor your device and to protect your device from Viruses, Malwares, Worms, Trojans, and Security Threats. This application is better known as Windows Firewall. But, windows firewall is not just limited to monitor and protect a device. We can also use this application to disable internet access for software and programs. To block an internet access from any type of software follow the steps given below. Let’s see how to do it.

How to Open Windows Firewall?

  • Open control panel from your start menu.
    • Open Control Panel in Windows
  • You can open Windows Firewall from Control Panel in two ways:
    • (1) If you are using Large Icons or Small Icons then you will find Windows Firewall option directly.

    • (2) If you are using Category, click on System and Security and then click on Windows Firewall.

How to Block Internet Access in Windows?

  • After you open windows firewall, In the left side panel, click on Advanced settings.

  • In the left side panel, click on Outbound Rules.

  • Expand Outbound Rules and then click on New Rule.

  • Here, Program is the selected by default, if not then select it and click on Next.

Note:  Here, Microsoft has provided you the facility to block the Port from internet access and to create your custom rule also.

  • Select This program path: and then In the text area, enter the address/path of the program that you want to block access to the internet. If you don’t want to type the address, click on Browse button and locate your program where it is installed (generally executable). After selection of program, click on Next.

  • Choose the option Block the connection.

  • In the next window, select when your blocking rules apply to the program. If you choose all of three options then internet will completely blocked for that program.

  • Give a name of your choice to the rule. In my case, I blocked an internet connection for vlc media player application, so I named it to Block vlc. You can write the description also for your future reference.

  • Before clicking on finish if you want to make any change in previous steps then click on the steps section in the left side panel otherwise click on Finish. Now, you can see your recently created rule in the Outbound Rule List.

Note: Outbound rule only blocks the outgoing connection from your programs. To block its Incoming connection you have to set Inbound rule also. Only thing you have to keep in your mind is to select Inbound rule instead of Outbound Rules. Remaining process is the same as above.

How to Re-Open Blocked Internet Access in Windows

Now, you know about how to block internet access in windows. But, if you change your mind or you want to let the use internet to the application/software then you can follow the steps given below.

Open the outbound rule services/application list (as discussed above). Select your application or service for which you want to open outgoing internet connection.

  • Here, if you want to open connection permanently then you can Delete the outbound rule or if you are opening connection temporary then do Right Click on application name and select Disable Rule. After you finish your work do Right Click on application name and select Enable Rule. Enjoy Blocking.

How to Disable Internet Access using Context Menu

If processes given above are not a cup of your tea then you should go with very simple trick. You can install third party software to block internet access in windows. The software is named as OneClickFirewall.

Using OneClickFirewall software you can block internet access in windows without technical knowledge. OneClickFirewall is very compact in size (less than 1 mb). Basically, When you install this software it adds an option to context menu to block internet access in windows. And using that context menu we adds rule (indirectly) to windows firewall and blocks an internet access in windows for that program. To download OneClickFirewall software click here. Let’s start.

After download completion, install the software. Find and locate your program. Do right click on executable (exe) of your program. For example, here I m blocking an internet access for Paint program.

Note: These option works only with exe not any other type of file. Like if you right click on any image / video / audio then you will not see these options in context menu.

In future, whenever you want to enable the internet for that program locate your program and select Restore Internet Access from context menu.
