Default Download Folder: How to Change It and Why?

How To Change Default Download Folder In Google Chrome And Mozilla Firefox

Nowadays, everyone uses the Internet. To download a video, games, software from the internet is a common task in daily life. But everyone can’t afford a highly configured computer/laptop. So people can have a computer with less RAM, less Hard Disk Capacity etc.

What Is A Default Download Folder In Browser?

Whenever you download a file from the internet or any other sources, it goes into download folder by default. “Default Download Folder” is the folder defined by system to save all downloaded files. No matter how the big file size is, or what is the type of your downloaded file. Your file could be text file with size of 5-10 kb or any mp3 song with size of 7-8mb or video file with size of 2-3 gb. If user specifies (tells to the system) where to save all downloaded items then system will save all of those items at particular location otherwise it goes into “Default Download Folder” which is predefined by system.

Reason Behind Low Performance Computer

Have you ever noticed that your computer’s performance is getting down or your system is legging?

I have seen many people who are used to download all files in C drive and there is much more space is empty in other drive. After some time they complains about system legging. But if your system is legging and other drive is empty then it does not make any sense to download files in C drive.

Why We Need to Change The Default Download folder?

If your C drive partition is full with chunk of files then it can affect computer’s performance. Because windows need some free space to function properly (to run background services and other stuffs). So if you change the download folder to other drive rather than C drive then your system’s performance can increase.

Google chrome has a default setting as “Downloads” folder and the path to access download folder is “C:\Username\Downloads”. This folder is in “C” drive that is system drive/partition. If size of C partition increases, computer performance decreases.

What’s The Solution?

Basically, there are two solutions to tackle the situation.

  • Move your big file into other drive every time after download completes.
  • Change the default download folder to any other drive.

What I think is, second option is much better for us because it takes effort to only once while in the first option we have to move file every time we download (a big size file). Let’s see how to achieve it.

After changing the default folder, whenever you will download something it will store in the folder in other drive rather than C drive. So system can use more space to run efficiently.
